I participated in the Career development Gathering 2025 held on December 19, an event which aimed at supporting doctoral students of our university by giving career guidance and opportunities to interact with students from different fields and potential employers as we are always deeply engaged in daily research and often lack access to information about career development and job hunting process in Japan, especially for international students.

In the first half of the event, Mr. Tomonori Fukasawa, president of Emerging Technologies Corporation, delivered lecture on career paths for PhD holders. He explained the differences between general Japanese recruitment system and PhD-oriented hiring, which many international students seem to be unfamiliar with it. He also addressed common concerns such as Japanese language requirement as most of the renowned companies in Japan requires Japanese communication skill and encouraged students to slowly gather up the courage to learn the language (communication level) so as that in the future students would not have to struggle with it and also to actively participate in career seminars and company sessions to broaden their opportunities.

The second half featured the company session by Sanoh Industrial Co., Ltd (三桜工業) and SmartSolutions Inc. Sanoh industrial is a manufacturing company specializing in automotive components, operating globally with focus on engineering and technological development. The company highlighted that it actively recruits doctoral students from diverse academic backgrounds and values logical thinking and problem-solving ability. SmartSolutions Inc. is an IT-oriented company that provides software, data-driven solutions and system development services, which collaborates with national research institutes and universities and supports research-driven projects that require advanced analytical and technical skills. The company emphasized opportunities for PhD holders to apply their research expertise in interdisciplinary and applied setting,

The event concluded with a networking session which allowed participants to engage in face-to-face discussion with the company representatives. This provided international students with valuable opportunity to ask questions directly about the concerns they have. Overall, the gathering was a meaningful opportunity to gain practical information and build connections beyond one`s own research field.

12月19日にスチューデントコモンズで開催されたCareer Development Gathering 2025 に参加しました。本イベントは、日々の研究活動に忙しく、他分野の博士学生やキャリア情報に触れる機会が限られている博士課程学生を対象に、就職活動に関する基礎知識の提供と交流の場を目的として留学生向けに開催されました。

前半では、Emerging Technologies Corporation 代表の 深澤 知憲 氏による「PhDとしてのキャリアと産業界でのキャリア」に関する講演が行われました。特に留学生に向けて、日本の一般的な新卒採用と博士人材向け採用の違いや、博士課程修了者に特化した採用プロセスについて分かりやすく説明がありました。日本語能力が求められる場合が多い一方で、博士人材には多様なキャリアの可能性があること、また積極的にキャリアイベントやセミナーに参加し、挑戦することの重要性が強調されました。

後半では、三桜工業株式会社および SmartSolutions株式会社による企業紹介が行われました。三桜工業株式会社は、自動車部品を中心とした製造業であり、専門分野に限定せず、博士課程学生の論理的思考力や課題解決能力を重視して採用している点が紹介されました。SmartSolutions株式会社はITを基盤とした企業で、筑波をはじめとする国内の多くの国立研究機関と連携しながら事業を展開していることが説明されました。

最後のネットワーキングでは、留学生を含む参加者が企業担当者やキャリア専門家と自由に意見交換を行い、日本での就職活動に対する不安や疑問を直接相談することができました。本イベントは、特に留学生にとって、日本でのキャリア形成を具体的に考える上で非常に有意義な機会であったと感じました。
